Here is something that has never happened before. The Panama Canal has been closed due to heavy rains. Read about it on the BBC news site.
They are getting so much rain that the lake level is too high for safe operation of the locks. Additionally, the current is stronger than normal where the Chagres River dumps into the canal at Gamboa.
The way to lower the lake is to open all of the spillway gates at the Gatun Dam. This photo shows just one of the gates open. Imagine the torrent of water with all of the gates open.
Update – Thursday, December 9. The canal and locks were re-opened after being closed for a total of 17 hours.
